Ueno A, Shimizu S, Tamamura S, Okuyama H, Naganuma T & Kaneko K Scientific Reports (2016) 6, 18990 doi : 10.1038/srep18990 This paper is freely available from the following site. http://www.nature.com/articles/srep18990 Brief summary (From abstract): (1) An anaerobic bacterium, Clostridium sp. strain HSAI-1 was isolated from the deep subsurface. (2) Strain HSAI-1 anaerobically decomposes humic substance (HS) which is one of main organic matter in the subsurface. (3) Strain HSAI-1 transforms HSs. (4) This study improves our understanding of the anaerobic decomposition of HSs in the hidden carbon cycling in the Earth’s subsurface.
